China Labor Protection Expo | Cold Protection Gloves Standard Upgrade: Enhancing Workplace Safety in Extreme Conditions
The development of cold protection gloves has become increasingly important as industries expand into extreme-temperature working environments. Recognizing this growing need, China’s national standardization authorities have recently released an updated national standard for cold protection gloves, demonstrating the country’s commitment to improving workplace safety across various sectors. This regulatory advancement, along with other significant developments in the field, has been prominently featured at major industry gatherings such as the China Labor Protection Expo.

The new standard, officially designated GB 38304-2025 “Hand protection—Protective gloves against cold,” was jointly issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China. This mandatory national standard, which is set to take effect on September 1, 2026, represents the first revision of the previous GB/T 38304-2019 version. According to the official documentation, the standard applies to protective gloves designed for use in climatic environments or work activities where temperatures can drop as low as -50°C. Several key enhancements distinguish the 2025 version from its predecessor. The standard introduces a more nuanced classification of temperature application ranges, dividing usage into two categories: above -30°C and between -50°C and -30°C. It also breaks down cold protection performance into two distinct dimensions: convective cold resistance, which evaluates a glove’s ability to prevent heat loss in airflow environments, and contact cold resistance, which assesses protection against heat conduction when handling cold objects. Furthermore, the standard establishes a performance linkage mechanism, ensuring that gloves with higher cold protection ratings also meet corresponding requirements for abrasion and tear resistance. A mandatory low-temperature bending test has been added for gloves intended for the -50°C to -30°C range, and a simplified three-code labeling system has been introduced to help users quickly identify product capabilities.
The growing emphasis on cold protection equipment is part of a broader trend in the global protective gloves market. According to industry data, the global safety gloves market was valued at approximately US$15.7 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$27 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8.05 percent. This growth is driven by increasing safety awareness, stricter workplace safety regulations, and rising demand across sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. The Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, has been identified as the fastest-growing market for protective gloves, fueled by rapid industrialization and expanding construction activities.
Technological innovation continues to reshape the cold protection glove landscape. Manufacturers are developing advanced materials and designs that balance thermal insulation with dexterity and durability. One notable innovation includes a glove system featuring a nylon shell over a soft napped acrylic liner, finished with foam latex coating on the palm and fingers for superior insulation and grip. Other advancements include lightweight composite materials that maintain flexibility even in sub-zero conditions, touchscreen-compatible designs that allow workers to operate devices without removing gloves, and high-visibility features for low-light environments. Some products now incorporate micro-encapsulated phase-change materials that activate with hand movement, providing adaptive thermal regulation. These innovations have been well received by safety professionals and frontline workers alike, as they address the long-standing challenge of maintaining manual dexterity while ensuring adequate protection against extreme cold.
With continued regulatory support, ongoing research and development, and rising safety awareness across all industry sectors, the outlook for cold protection gloves and the broader personal protective equipment market remains highly positive. The updated national standard is expected to drive further improvements in product quality and performance, ultimately ensuring that workers in extreme environments are better protected than ever before.
